Steven Albini Beats Stud Specialist Jeff Lisandro to Claim 2018 WSOP $1,500 Seven Card Stud Crown

Aside from a successful career as a musician and record producer, Steven Albini now has a major poker accomplishment to boast about. Albini successfully navigated through a number of poker heavyweights in the 2018 WSOP $1,500 Seven Card Stud to be crowned the event’s champion for his first gold bracelet and $105,629 in prize money.

The event saw 310 entries pay the buy-in to take aim at the title. After three days of play, Albini secured a spot among the final eight. The tournament’s official final table was represented by three multiple gold bracelet winners, two of whom – Jeff Lisandro and Chris Ferguson, were each vying for their seventh piece. It is also important to note that Lisandro has worn the Stud crown multiple times over the years, which made him the most feared opponent in contention.

Facing seasoned opponents had apparently not scared Albini that much. The player admitted that he considered himself a mediocre player, but still he pointed out that he was very comfortable playing stud and that combined with his terrific run over the past few days came of great help in his pursuit of the title.

Albini went on to say that socializing with fellow poker players improved his game and how he felt at the table significantly. Matt Ashton, a former Poker Players Championship champ, had been a great mentor to Albini, the brand new WSOP gold bracelet winner further revealed.

Heads-Up Action

Albini was keen to admit that he had not had much heads-up experience in stud prior to last night when he ended up playing against none other but one of the most widely decorated players to have entered the tournament.

The heads-up match began with Albini holding a very slight lead over his final opponent. It all showed that it would be a long and grueling duel, and that proved case. Lisandro quickly doubled to take the lead. The two players traded the chip lead multiple times over the course of heads-up play, until Albini tied the stacks after winning a couple of smaller pots, then emerged the chip leader to never look back. Just several hands later, he finished off his much more experienced opponent.

Lisandro took a consolation prize of $65,629 for his runner-up finish in the tournament. A seventh gold bracelet eluded the player but with the WSOP still being in its initial stages, we will certainly be seeing more of him.

As for Albini, he added $105,629 to his previous WSOP winnings, which totaled a little over $55,000 prior to last night. The players has now cashed in six events from the series.

The $1,500 Seven Card Stud drew 310 entries who created a $418,500 prize pool. The top 47 finishers were rewarded with the portion of the money, with minimum payouts starting from $2,250. Each of the eight final tablists was guaranteed $8,355.
