The WPTDeepStacks Hollywood Main Event was completed last night at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood after players from all parts of the world contended for the title for six days. Scott Baumstein was the last man standing to capture the first-place prize of $220,238, his career’s best accomplishment.

Baumstein bested a massive field of 1,366 entries to lay hands on the title. The player entered the tournament’s official nine-handed final table with an average chip stack. However, he managed to gain momentum quite quickly and to build a solid stack that rocketed him to the chip leader position and eventually to the winner’s seat.

Including last night’s six-figure payout, Baumstein now has more than $1.8 million in live tournament earnings. The player has previously cashed in a number of different live tournaments, and has won some of them. In 2011, for instance, he emerged the victor in the Master Classics of Poker €10,000 No-Limit Hold’em High Roller, good for a payout of €80,640.

A highlight from his performance at the final table at the WPTDeepStacks Hollywood Main Event was that the player eliminated seven of his eight opponents.

The final table of the latest WPTDeepStacks Main Event was off to a slow start at the host venue on Tuesday. It took over an hour before a player hit the rail. Action then sped up a little bit. What is more, Baumstein began putting more and more pressure over his remaining opponents, building a stack that accounted for over 17 million in chips at a certain point.

It actually came down to the heads-up match between the eventual winner and his final opponent Lumni Zhuta. The duel began with Baumstein holding more than two times more chips than Zhuta. While many probably thought that it would be an easy match for Baumstein, things did not turn up that way.

In fact, Zhuta proved to be a particularly tough nut to crack. Despite the initial chip disadvantage, the player managed to double up through Baumstein on four occasions over the course of their heads-up match. However, the eventual champion recovered quickly from his opponent’s blows and eventually pulled ahead never looking back.

On what turned out to be the final hand in play, Zhuta moved all in pre-flop for his last 1.9 million, and Baumstein called. The former tabled [6h][3c] to the latter’s [Ad][Qd]. The board ran out [Kh][9c][5d][9h][5h] to end Zhuta’s participation in the event and to secure his opponent with the title. Zhuta collected $155,126 for his runner-up finish. Baumstein, on the other hand, scooped $220,239 which included a seat into the season-ending WPTDeepStacks Championship.

The WPTDeepStacks Hollywood Main Event was a $1,100 buy-in tournament. As mentioned above, a total of 1,366 contenders entered the tournament to create a prize pool of $1,325,020. The top 171 finishers received a portion of the money, min-cashes beginning from $1,547.
